Hogar Esperanza

            Santiago, Chile

'Home of Hope'

Hogar Esperanza is an orphanage in Santiago, the capital of Chile.  It is a non-profit organization run entirely on donations.  The home takes children of all ages, most of whom have experienced abuse or neglect.

PL staff member Sarah Bigney spent three months volunteering at Hogar Esperanza in 2003.  Throughout the summer of '04, Sarah shared with us the stories of these children, who would have no home, no education, and no love and support if not for the good work of Hogar Esperanza.

At PL in the summer of 2004 campers learned about the children at the home, and about culture of Chile. Together we had the opportunity to grow as stewards of God's will to the less fortunate.

About 40 children currently live in the home.  They range from age 5 months to University students and older. Education, health care, food, and clothing are all very expensive to provide for so many children, who deserve love, care, and an opportunity to build a future for themselves.

As Christians we are all called to care for the poor and abused.  These children deserve a chance for love and for a family just like every child.  Our gifts will continue the amazing work of the home.

"If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountain and go in search for the one that has gone astray?  And if he finds it... he rejoices over it more than the ninety-nine who never went astray.  So it is not the will of your Creator in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost."

~Matthew 16:10-14 (NRSV)
