The Log Book
Sunday, July 20 P.M.

We all arrived at Pilgrim Lodge around eleven o’clock. We had lunch with the other camp counselors and once done, we packed up the boats and left around one-thirty. We arrived at Moosehead Lake around four o’clock, repacked the boats and launched them. We rowed around the island to Hardscrabble Point where we set up camp. We ate dinner at seven-thirty, corn and hamburgers. We had a small vespers at nine o’clock and settled down around ten-thirty. A few of us watched the stars. They were so beautiful and numerous. Two raccoons got into our things and a fox chased them away.  ~ Beka ~

Here are four new campers Andy & Carrlyn in the forward seats and Tyler & Peter in the aft seats. They begin the experience of “Hands that Row”.

These campers are in the Heron and the Loon can be seen one point off the starboard bow. We have all our gear loaded and are heading for Hardscrabble Point.

Monday, July 22- A.M.

We woke up around seven-fifteen and Devon and Tyler made breakfast, eggs, bacon & bagels. A few of us went in the lake and after we had a morning watch. We are about to set off to Big Duck to camp there for tonight and maybe Tuesday and Wednesday night. ~ Beka ~

Today we had to get up at six-thirty in the morning and eat breakfast. We packed the boat and went to the North East Carry. We bought stuff at the store. It rained. The trip took all day, we ate lunch in the rain. ~ Carrlyn ~

When we got back to camp Tyler and Andy went swimming, Devon went to bed, we had beans and hot dogs for dinner. Tyler fell and lost his first plate of beans. Vespers was done by Carrlyn and Beka. Everything except the sitting on the rocks was good.

Lets go tallywacking”, Andy. Another Moosehead tradition is created, “legs that tallywack or tallywacking legs”.

Wednesday, July 24 A.M.

When everyone awoke it was lightly raining. As we stumbled up to the “kitchen” we were greeted with oatmeal, pop tarts and bagels. Oh yum, fruit too. The wonderful part of this breakfast was the fact that everyone could sleep as long as we wanted. No, “Rise and Shine” this morning. (Thank goodness) After breakfast everyone freshen up and Andy and I went swimming. Tyler joined us later. Morning watch was about everyone being family. After the service we discussed Harry Sylvester and learning disabilities. We also learned about the history of our boat the Heron and the Loon. So ends my entry. ~ Peter ~

Walking a bit of the North East Carry

Wednesday, afternoon

We had a late lunch – quite a smorgasbord – peanut butter & jelly, chicken, cucumber, carrots & celery. Then we packed suits, towels and water shoes and set off for Little Duck. We decided to hike it rather than row. Mike set the compass and we went thru the woods. Saw lots of moose, deer and bear droppings along with raspberry bushes. We went thru shallow swamps with many downed trees, mucky water and slippery footing. ‘We tried to stay dry at first, but soon gave that up. We got to the beach with the ledge and had fun swimming and jumping. We came back a different way and were on the road most of the time. Steve saw a deer. We bushwhacked the last bit and were glad to see the lake and get back to camp – or home as we are calling it. What an adventure – lots of complaining as we were mucking about but I think everyone enjoyed it.

Dinner tasted great – mac & cheese, ham, waldorf salad and buttery popcorn a little later. Waldorf salad was new to many of the kids.

Vespers was very nice – great discussions about family traditions and what makes a family traditions and what makes a family, closed with a group hug while singing Kumbaya. Much to Andy’s surprise, “I didn’t know people really did that”.

 Thursday, July 24- A.M.

After our “slumber party”, we woke all stiff and sore at about 9 a.m. It was nice that we didn’t have to get up too early, because with all the snoring and sleep talking, sleep was minimal. When we got up breakfast was ready! Hot cocoa as usual warmed our freezing selves and scrambled eggs and CAKE were filling. Out stay at Big Duck was coming to an end and we were forced to take down our tarp city….tear! Just as we were collapsing our tents the strangest thing happened…it started to rain. Wow, it hadn’t rained all week, lol (lots of laughs). So as we took down our tents we got wet yet again. Morning watch was focused on friends today and we had some good conversations. This concluded out last morning at Big Duck and the fifth day at church camp. ~ Devon ~

Thursday, July 24- P.M.

At Big Duck we all pitched in and carried the kitchen boxes down to the Heron. Andy asked if he could pump out the Heron and with all the rain it certainly needed to be pumped. Six of us, three to port and three to starboard eased the Heron off the log and into the water. Joanne and Steve were up in the kitchen area removing the tarps and lines strung from tree to tree. With all the rain we had the kitchen area was the only dry spot we had. The rest of us loaded our gear into the Heron. We started the boat loading with all the small soft bags until the first two holds of the Heron were full up to the seats. Then the tarps were laid over the seats for the loading of the three food boxes, three coolers, kitchen box, five or six milk crates and finally tied on the water buckets.  Devon and Beka tied down each layer of gear using the handholds along the gunnels of the boat. Then the whole “camp” was covered with a blue tarp, with this the Heron was shipshape.  The sun broke through and turned the air into warm moisture and some of us had to put on sun screen for the long row to Hardscrabble Point. The sun stayed with us for over an hour then we could see rain columns and dark clouds farther down the lake. At this time the rain columns were on each side of us and were traveling northward as we rowed southward. Two float planes passed us heading south. This was on a day when the ducks were not even flying. The planes were low and staying over the water for a quick landing if required. One of the floatplanes tipped its wings to say hello to us as we rowed. We thread the Heron like a thread through the eye of a needle until we reached the last point of land before we had to take a heading across the lake to Hardscrabble Point. Sam turned on the cell phone a few times but there were no bars that came up on the cell phone signal strength. Sam was going to call PL and Carrlyn asked if she could call her Mom, but with no signal on the phone Sam slowly pressed and held the off button. With hands back on the oars we picked up the pace on the rowing. The rain columns moved in quickly and socked in Mount Kineo as the rain was right off our bow. Some of us put on our rain gear and kept rowing into the pending downpour. A flash of lighting was seen by some. Carrlyn thought it would be a good time to say the Lords Prayer, so with oars making four time we all said, “Our father…” The rain hit us hard with those big round fat rain drops that hit with a pop on our skin and a kerpluk on the water. The raindrops hit the lake with such force that the noise made some of us start singing, “Raindrops are a fallen on our heads and…I am free… nothing is worrying me”. Beka spread here arms and continued singing when the rest of us ran out of the words. She said that her Dad sings to her all those songs that Steve sings. The rain passed and we were wet again. But now the Loon could be seen on the shoreline of Hardscrabble Point. Joanne, Devon and Beka guided the Heron into our slip and beach it on the shoreline. A group quickly went to set up the kitchen tarp and tent tarps while the others emptied the boat of all the gear. Dinner was ready in no time and we even had a folded blue tarp tied to each of the picnic table seats so we had dry seats. Hot chocolate and tea warmed the bones and veggie burgers, fruit salad and cookies filled our bellies.

After a brief discussion about sleeping arrangements another tent was set up with the familiar sound of duck tape being ripped off to aid in the repair of the tent set up.

Then Devon and Peter gave us a most wonderful vespers. As part of the vesper they had us sing, “Bless our friends” (to the tune of Edelweiss). Then we discussed the quote, “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possible not born until they arrived and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born”. Vesper’s was over at ten-forty p.m. and then Steve, Joanne and I shared out thoughts on the day and we all went to bed in our tents on Hardscrabble Point.

Sunset on top of Mount Kineo

Friday, 25 July a.m.

The stars were out last night as we went to bed and I awoke at six this morning to a dry breeze from the south and clearing skies. By eight in the morning we were all dining on blueberry pancakes (except Carrlyn who opted for plain) and talking excitedly about drying clothes, tents and selves. Mike laid out tarps in the field above the beach while others strung clotheslines in the breeze. Soon the camp looked like a major yard sale with sleeping bags and gear lying and hanging everywhere. We swam, read and talked in the glorious sunshine while a miraculous solar drying event took place. Rebekah and Tyler led us in a Morning Watch focused on welcoming strangers under God’s Roof. Lunch was brought to the beach/field and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to eat while under “God’s Roof” instead of “Mike’s Tarp” for the first time since Tuesday dinner. During lunch we took stock of the plans that everyone had for the day (climb Kineo, stay in camp, row to Pebble Beach, stay in camp, eat dinner early to get to Kineo summit for dinner and stay in camp). We decided to pack dinner (spaghetti) in the boat and row to Pebble Beach, walk to the “village” and the store, swim, cook, eat and return to camp to change clothes in time to head up the mountain at six p.m. That would take care of all but one of the listed desires for the day! ~ Steve ~

Jacob & Mike on Pebble Beach

 Friday PM
After eating lunch and removing all our clothes that were lying on the ground to dry, we packed the boat and headed to Pebble Beach. Since we are hiking tonight we decided that we would bring our dinner with us to Pebble Beach, eat there and then row back to camp and leave for the hike. It gives us more time at Pebble Beach. The row to Pebble Beach is only about 30 or so minutes and it is a very easy row. On our way to the beach, everyone got a chance to see the cliff side of Kineo. We landed on the beach and right as we were pulling the boat up we heard someone yell “Hey Seavey”. It turns out that Mike’s nephew was there, Jacob. It is always neat to see someone you know on this trip. After they talked for a bit we all headed to Kineo Village. A long time ago Kineo Village was this big hotel and now it is just a few summer houses and a golf course. There was one store that we knew of and when we got there it was closed and some people were angry. We continued because we knew that there was also a golf snack shop. Before we went there it was time for the annual group pyramid picture. This picture has been taken every year that I have gone. The boys were all on bottom and Devon, Joanne, and myself were on the second level and Carrlyn and Beka were on the very top. After all the pictures were taken, we all just collapsed and continued walking.

We reached the gold snack shop and everyone went it. People bought sodas and candy bars and ice cream but what I think people enjoyed the most was that there was toilet and flushed. It was getting late and I kept on reminding Mike that we were on a schedule and so he and I walked back to the beach to start dinner. Spaghetti and salad were on the menu and while the adults were doing their own thing us kids ate chocolate bars and Beka saw some ducks. She must have taken 20 pictures of those ducks. It was kind of neat watching them; we would throw them food and see what they ate. After dinner was al packed away we loaded the boat again and headed back to Hardscrabble. On the way back we encountered two jet skies. Carrlyn and Andy had this great idea to ask them to give us some waves. Well did they give us waves. On the first pass one jet ski got one side of the boat soaked and on the second pass he made a wave that almost capsized the entire boat. Everyone got wet. The one day that it didn’t rain and we still managed to get our clothes wet. Instead of being angry we just laughed it off, at least it was sunny and our clothes dried somewhat. When we got back to camp we had to hurry to pack for the hike. We didn’t want to miss the sunset on top of the fire tower.  Steve hurried us along and we almost left on time. The hike up there starts out relatively flat and then just as you are getting used to the flat ground it goes up rather steeply. I had forgotten just how steep it gets. I chose to take my time and bring up the rear. I thought that the overlook where we take pictures would never come soon enough.

“Hands That Row”

Mount Kineo Fire Tower

After the overlook, there is only about a 20 minute or so hike to the fire tower. When we got to the top everyone took a few deep breaths and started up the tower. This tower is very high and the metal steps made it kind of difficult to climb. Andy started climbing but decided that going up was not really a good idea for the moment. Everyone else went up and drank some water and relaxed for a few minutes. The sunset was not a beautiful as in past years but it was still cool to watch. After the sunset Andy made it up the tower. I was very proud of him and glad that he could join all of us. Mike had brought along him laptop computer and all week he had taken digital pictures and had downloaded them on his computer and put them into a slide show. We watched and enjoyed the show as the sun set further and further. Finally the battery went and we all went down the tower. It was getting a little dark so we all pulled out our flashlights as we headed down the mountain. We stopped at another overlook to have Vespers. Mike and I had planned it and since it was a very busy day we sort of planned it on the way down from the tower, it was still good though. We sang a lot of the songs that we had not sung yet during the week. During one song Devon and Beka started laughing and I guess that someone was singing really off key. After we sung some songs, and read some scriptures the adults had something to give all of us. They had a rock for each of us and on the rock were written a word or two to describe us during the week. Here is what everyone’s rock says:

                        Beka: eager adventurer

                        Tyler: team player

                        Peter: generous

                        Andy: #1 homie & storyteller

                        Carrlyn: stylin’ camper

                        Devon: peacemaker

                        Sam: spiritual leader

After all the rocks were passed out we all gathered around and sang Kumbaya, Andy’s favorite song ☺. We headed back down the mountain and since there is a part of the trial that can go either right or left and you have to keep going right I took the lead. It was sort of difficult because there are supposed to be blue markers on the trees but someone had come along and scrapped them off of some of the trees. What helped was that the paint chips were still on the ground. We made it down the mountain and came out right by picture rock, a big rock that earned its name because for many trips there was a picture taken on it. We lay down and watched the stars for a little bit. Then it was time to make the final leg in the hike, back to Hardscrabble. The walk back to camp is flat but it seems to go on forever. Beka was leading and a few minutes into the walk she screamed, which made me and Devon scream. I didn’t know what she say but there was a pacifier in the trail and I guess that Beka saw something moving in the trail so she screamed. We all laughed about it later but honestly Beka it was ok that you screamed, I would have screamed too if I saw what you saw. We continued on and Devon decided that she wanted to do a trust walk in the dark, so Andy stayed with her and she didn’t run into anything and hurt herself. When we were all finally back at camp we ate chocolate and drank some juice. No one knew just how late it was, I think it was either midnight of 12:30. I had spoken with Mike earlier about us all sleeping out on the beach together. He said no problem so we put a tarp on the ground and everyone brought his or her sleeping bag and pillows. Carrlyn had decided to stay back in her tent so there were just 6 of us. We were all talking about different topics when out of no where we hear the very loud scream come from Carrlyn. We all answered back “What?” and her response was “There is something by my tent!!” Andy went to check it out and a few minutes later he returned with Carrlyn. There had been a couple of raccoons that were making noises around her tent so she came and joined us. Then Beka, Carrlyn and Andy went to the bathroom and as they were walking there was this huge crash come from the kitchen, they all screamed and Devon, who had gone to the kitchen to check it out came screaming and running back to the tarp. Mike came out of his tent to tell us that we needed to stop running around and be a little quieter. After that people started to settle down. We talked about our different schools and before I knew it I was asleep.

                        ~ Sam

Saturday AM

After a night filled with much excitement, thanks to the raccoon, we awoke. Steve announced that breakfast was ready and I got up first. I packed my sleeping bag and started to pack the rest of my things. Breakfast was pancakes and fruit. It was a little quiet at the table, I think that people were finally realizing that we were going home. I know that I was a little sad. I love being at Moosehead so much and being around all of you guys and it is sad to see that all end. After breakfast, people had to pack up their stuff and then help pack everything else. Packing the boats was easier then when we packed them at Big Duck, we now had two boats to pack so there was more room in each boat. It was about 10 or so when we left Hardscrabble. It was weird seeing it fade away into the distance. Over the past five years it has changed so much but it has still maintained that peacefulness atmosphere. The row back to Rockwood was interesting. In the Loon were Beka, Devon, Joanne, Steve, and myself and it was a nice peaceful ride, we took our time and didn’t try and race the other boat.

In the other boat there was Tyler, Peter, Andy, Mike, and Carrlyn and I hear that there was a heated discussion. People were probably anxious to return home. When we got to Rockwood and re-packed the boats we had to wait for Janelle. It was nice just to relax and sit in the sun. Janelle showed up and we hitched the boat up to her Jeep and headed to Greenville. We ate lunch at the Boom Chain Restaurant but that didn’t fill us campers up. We walked across the street and got some more junk food for the way home. Devon and I got our beloved Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream. Beka was really hungry, she ate an Italian and a pint of ice cream. The ice cream filled us up so much that we all thought that if we ate one more bite we would explode.

The ride back to PL was a quiet one in the Jeep. Devon and Beka both slept, I couldn’t for some reason. Janelle told us all about what we had missed during the week, we read the paper, and talked. Arriving at PL was both sad and happy. We all were tired and in need to a shower, a home cooked meal, and some clean, dry clothes. After one last picture by the boat, people started leaving with their parents. Since I was going home with Janelle I stayed and helped unload all the gear from the boat, then it was time for me to say my good byes to Steve, Joanne, and Mike. Even though I live down the street from Mike and we go to the same church it was sad saying good bye to him. And I see Joanne some during the year, she and my dad are close friends and dean together at PL, but it was really nice having her come on this trip, I am glad that you joined us Joanne. I don’t see Steve at all so it was a real good bye with him. Thank you so much Steve for coming back. You are so good with kids and teach us a lot about nature and many other things.

I want to thank everyone else for making this week one of the best weeks I have ever had. This year meant a lot to me. It has been neat to see how I have grown over the five years that I have been going. I remember my very first year when I didn’t know how to do anything and now I hope that I have taught you guys everything I know about Moosehead. I know that when I go away to college I will remember all you guys. I will try to keep in touch as much as I can, but everyone else has to promise to do the same. I hope you guys had a good week. Please do come back next year, the first year is always the hardest and to those of you who might not have enjoyed it as much as others, it does get better. Moosehead is a wonderful trip. You get to see things and experience things that you can’t do unless you are on this trip. Enjoy your year and who knows I might see you all again next year! Maybe.

Samantha Godfrey signing off one last time.
